There are two approaches to reach the temple: 1. Via the Punakha Suspension Bridge – This route takes approximately 15–20 minutes to reach the temple. 2. Through the Punakha Valley (recommended) – A scenic hike through the valley, offering breathtaking views, which takes about an hour.
Tip: Be sure to climb to the highest level of the temple for a majestic panoramic view of the Punakha Valley.
Built in 1499 by the 14th Drukpa, Ngawang Choegyel, Chimi Lhakhang temple was constructed in honour of Saint Drukpa Kunley, fondly known as the "Divine Madman." Widely recognised as the Fertility Temple, it is a revered site for both locals and visitors from around the world. Its reputation is firmly upheld by locals and international devotees alike. Traditionally, those blessed at this temple often name their child "Kunley" in tribute.
The journey to the temple takes approximately 20 minutes and offers a picturesque path through fertile paddy fields and the charming village of Sopsokha Valley.
Stretching 160–180 metres, the Punakha Suspension Bridge is one of the longest in Bhutan. Perched high above the swift-flowing Po Chhu River, the bridge is adorned with vibrant prayer flags, creating a stunning visual display.
