Situated just three hours from Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, Punakha stands out with its distinct climate. Due to its lower elevation, Punakha experiences warmer winters and summers compared to other Dzongkhags. Renowned for its agricultural abundance, the district is Bhutan’s primary rice producer. Things to do and see at Punakha
Punakha Dzong, also known as the "Palace of Great Happiness," is an architectural masterpiece and the current administrative centre of Punakha District. Constructed in 1637 by Ngawang Namgyal, the 1st Zhabdrung Rinpoche, it holds the distinction of being Bhutan’s second-oldest and second-largest dzong.
Nestled at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, Punakha Dzong is often regarded as the most picturesque dzong in the country.
Tip: Don’t miss the opportunity to capture its beauty! There are at least three prime photo spots around Punakha Dzong—be sure to ask your guide to take you there. Hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten
Commissioned by Her Majesty the Queen Mother Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuk, Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten is a stunning temple dedicated to the well-being of the Kingdom, its people, and all sentient beings. This four-storey structure was uniquely designed based on holy scriptures rather than traditional engineering manuals.
There are two approaches to reach the temple: 1. Via the Punakha Suspension Bridge – This route takes approximately 15–20 minutes to reach the temple. 2. Through the Punakha Valley (recommended) – A scenic hike through the valley, offering breathtaking views, which takes about an hour.
Tip: Be sure to climb to the highest level of the temple for a majestic panoramic view of the Punakha Valley.
Built in 1499 by the 14th Drukpa, Ngawang Choegyel, Chimi Lhakhang temple was constructed in honour of Saint Drukpa Kunley, fondly known as the "Divine Madman." Widely recognised as the Fertility Temple, it is a revered site for both locals and visitors from around the world. Its reputation is firmly upheld by locals and international devotees alike. Traditionally, those blessed at this temple often name their child "Kunley" in tribute.
The journey to the temple takes approximately 20 minutes and offers a picturesque path through fertile paddy fields and the charming village of Sopsokha Valley.
Stretching 160–180 metres, the Punakha Suspension Bridge is one of the longest in Bhutan. Perched high above the swift-flowing Po Chhu River, the bridge is adorned with vibrant prayer flags, creating a stunning visual display. It serves as a vital connection between Punakha town and Punakha Dzong, frequently used by locals as a convenient shortcut.
Tip: Ideal for thrill-seekers, this bridge offers a quick adrenaline rush and breathtaking views!
White-water rafting in Bhutan is becoming an increasingly popular activity, drawing tourists to experience the stunning confluence of two rivers and the breathtaking scenery of the Punakha Valley. Rafters can choose between two exciting routes:
1. Mo Chhu River – A 10 km course featuring 10 rapids, classified as Class 2 to 2+, making it a great option for beginners or those seeking a gentler adventure. 2. Po Chhu River – A more challenging 16 km course with 15 rapids ranging from Class 2 to 4, perfect for thrill-seekers looking for an adrenaline-pumping experience.
