We leave the country with a lifetime of enriching experience

We came to Bhutan with zero expectations but will certainly leave the country with a lifetime of enriching experience. We basically left our hearts in Bhutan la.

Our guide (Jigme) and driver (KJ - sorry just couldn’t catch the full name!) was a dynamic whacky duo la. We had so much spontaneous fun and at the back of our mind, we know we are in safe hands. They have a knack for catching the smallest details (although we don’t explicitly mention it) and will do their best to accommodate, try to make the experience better. Jigme as a guide is knowledgeable and is able to engage to share key historical points on the places that we visit. KJ on the other hand is extremely patient, humorous and considerate as well.

The pace of the tour in itself was perfect. It wasn’t too rushed - it allows us ample time to immerse ourselves in the culture. What we like is the flexibility to tweak the itinerary (and some are good suggestions given by Jigme).

Some of the highlights was definitely the hike to Tiger’s Nest, Wangditse Lhakhang (nearly died), and Khamsum Yuley Temple. Some of which were challenging but we soldiered on anyway. The Paro Tshechu festival was amazing as well, where we get to wear our Kira and were basically one with the local crowd. Dochula Pass was beautiful and so was the the Dzongs (personal favourite being the Punakha Dzong for its rich history).

We love all the spontaneous gestures by Jigme/KJ as well - like the short stop at the riverbank at Paro was fun. Also, the surprise birthday celebration at Punakha for my friend was also an extremely thoughtful gesture.

The selection of hotels was alright. It had what we needed but the staff really made up for the shortcomings. Special shout out to the staff at Lyhehuel Hotel at Paro - on the first night we were freezing cold and they brought a bigger heater for us and also extra thick blankets. That night we also had issues with the hot water for shower and they immediately replaced the water heater. Exemplary hospitality, befitting of the Bhutanese culture.

Food wise was not an issue for us - it tastes like our usual Chinese food that we get back in Singapore, just that in Bhutan it is more organic and offers a healthier option.

All in, although Bhutan is not the most “economical” country to visit - everything really makes up for it. We love the rich history, culture, the people and to top it off beautiful nature surrounded by the Himalayan mountains. So yes, it is truly a place worth going - at least once in a lifetime. We will definitely plan another trip, maybe to the Eastern side of Bhutan just so we can see what other things that the country has got to offer.
