My recent Bhutan adventure was made even more unforgettable from the many serendipitous experiences
My recent Bhutan adventure was made even more unforgettable from the many serendipitous experiences when I was there (these, on top of a totally well-organised and partially customised trip - yes I could actually plan part of my itinerary, with the help of a very knowledgeable agent, of course..).
I witnessed two full rainbows next to elusive Jomolhari; had an animated banter with a bunch of young monks; woke up to golden padi terraces during a cozy farm-house stay; talked philosophy with my guide as hypnotic chants from a mystical cliff-face monastery echoed through the hills; and even gawked at the mighty Himalayas on my flight back.
But it was definitely the soft-spoken Bhutanese - with their laid-back humour and warm hospitality - who left me with the most profound impression. Among many others, I was welcomed by my guide Kuenzang Tenzin, and driver Kelzang Chateo, both of whom were always chirpy, yet totally professional, knowledgeable, super punctual, and more than accommodating to my many (random) requests to stop for photographs. They displayed great initiative on several occasions (this, I was most impressed with), so that I could take in a little extra, or settle in more comfortably, and this allowed me to get a more lasting peek into their country, culture, and lives during my too-short visit.
My friends on the trip had similarly exceptional experiences, so the professionalism we got all around deserves mention. In short, I cannot wait to go back - and maybe cut my hike time up Tiger's Nest by half next visit :) Tashi Delek!
