Meet Your Host: Tshering Om

My name is Tshering Om, and I am the owner, housekeeper, and cook of my small homestay. I’m in my late thirties and have two sons who are studying at a nearby boarding school. Most of the time, it’s just me, my mother, and my father living in this home.

A Homestay in the Heart of Dzongdrakha Village

My homestay is situated in Dzongdrakha village, near the iconic Dzongdrakha Temple—from which our village gets its name. The word “Dzong” means fortress, and “Dra” means cliff.

This temple holds deep spiritual significance for the locals. It plays a key role in the annual Paro Tshechu, as the festival both begins and concludes here—a centuries-old tradition still practised today.

A Life Rooted in Agriculture

Most of us in the village are farmers, and agriculture is our primary way of life. I especially love tending to my fruit and vegetable gardens in the spring, summer, and autumn when they are at their peak.

My house is surrounded by paddy fields, which require much of my time and effort, as rice is our primary crop. We strive to keep our farming as organic as possible—using clean, unpolluted irrigation streams from the mountains, organic seedlings, and natural fertilisers such as cow dung from our own sheds instead of chemical fertilisers.

With modern developments, we also incorporate new farming techniques and machinery while preserving our traditional methods.

An Authentic Rural Retreat

My homestay is an ideal retreat for guests looking to experience authentic rural village life and farm living. The serene views of the village and valley offer a peaceful escape from the bustle of city life.

For those interested, I also offer cooking sessions, where guests can learn to prepare traditional Bhutanese dishes using my family recipes and fresh ingredients from my farm.

Additionally, we provide hot stone baths, a traditional remedy for muscle aches and joint pains—perfect after a long hike or simply for relaxation.
