Meet Your Host: Choden

Hello! My name is Choden and I live with my husband, our two children, and three wonderful grandchildren. Our home is always bustling with life, laughter, and the warmth of family.

A Home with History

Our house is more than just a place to live—it carries generations of memories. Passed down from my grandparents to my parents, and now to me, it is over a hundred years old. While I have made some renovations and repainted parts of the house to keep it vibrant and welcoming, I have always preserved its traditional essence. Since I often host guests and cater to tourists, I have also added modern amenities to ensure their comfort while maintaining the charm of a true Bhutanese home.

Nestled in the serene village of Nemjo, we are located on the outskirts of Paro, just a 20-minute drive from Paro town. The setting offers the perfect blend of rural tranquility and easy access to the town’s attractions.

Our Cherished Traditions

One of the most important traditions in my family is our annual ritual, a deeply meaningful event where all my family members gather, and we invite monks to our home’s altar to conduct prayers and rituals. This ceremony is a time to seek blessings for our family’s well-being and for a prosperous year ahead. It is also a wonderful occasion to bring our neighbours together—we share a feast, talk, laugh, drink, and even dance late into the night.

Beyond this annual celebration, we also uphold the simple yet meaningful custom of dining together as a family. Unless someone is away, we always try to eat our meals together, as it gives us a chance to reflect on our day and strengthens our bond.

A Day in My Life

My day begins at my altar, where I offer prayers and make offerings. This morning ritual sets a peaceful and positive tone for the day.

Afterward, I tend to my animals—our cows and chickens. I am deeply grateful to them for providing us with fresh milk and eggs, and their manure helps nourish the crops in my garden. Then, I take a stroll through my orchard and vegetable garden, gathering fresh fruits and vegetables for breakfast and meals throughout the day. This connection with nature is something I truly cherish.

A Unique Guest Experience

For my guests, I strive to offer an authentic Bhutanese rural experience. Meals at our home are special—except for the non-vegetarian items, everything is homegrown and organic, straight from our farm to the table. If guests are interested, I am always happy to teach them how to milk a cow, tend to the garden, or cook traditional Bhutanese dishes using my family recipes.

For those who love the outdoors, there are several scenic hiking trails nearby. After a long walk, guests can indulge in our traditional hot stone bath, a soothing remedy known for relieving joint pain and relaxing the muscles.

Guests can also try their hand at Bhutan’s national sport, archery, or engage in our local version of darts, played outdoors for a fun and friendly competition.

Because we are tucked away from the hustle and bustle of town, our home is also an ideal retreat for yoga and meditation enthusiasts, or simply for those seeking solitude and a peaceful escape.

I take great joy in sharing my home, traditions, and way of life with visitors. Whether you are looking for adventure, cultural immersion, or a quiet place to unwind, I welcome you to experience the beauty of Bhutanese rural living with us.
