Ugyen’s homestay offers a unique glimpse into Bhutanese heritage, set within a 400-year-old ancestral home that has been carefully preserved over generations. With a sacred altar on the top floor, a warm and welcoming space for guests on the second, and a living museum showcasing treasured artefacts on the ground floor, every corner of the house tells a story. Guests can enjoy traditional experiences like a hot stone bath, explore Bhutan’s national sport with Ugyen’s archery sessions, and immerse themselves in the rich cultural traditions of village life.
Meet Your Host: Ugyen
My name is Ugyen, and I live here with my wife, our two children, and my father.

A Home Steeped in History
Our home is over 400 years old, passed down through generations from our great-grandparents. While it has undergone several restorations and renovations over the years, it still retains its traditional charm.

The Structure of Our Traditional House
Our house has three stories, each serving a unique purpose:
-
Top Floor – A Sacred Space
This is where my altar sits—a sacred space for prayers and offerings to the gods and deities, who, in turn, bless my family with peace and prosperity.
-
Second Floor – Warmth and Hospitality
The second floor houses our kitchen and dining area, along with rooms for our guests. This is where we gather, share meals, and exchange stories.
-
Ground Floor – A Living Museum
This floor was once used to shelter our animals, but since we stopped that practice long ago, I transformed it into a small museum. Here, I display my collection of traditional artefacts and treasured items from the past, passed down to me by my parents.

A Traditional Experience for Visitors
To offer a more immersive experience to our guests, we have also extended some rooms nearby for those who wish to try a local hot stone bath—our traditional remedy for joint pains and muscle aches.

Sharing My Passion for Archery
My curiosity and passion for interacting with travellers inspired me to open my home to visitors who want to experience the traditional way of village life. As an archery enthusiast, I also love sharing my passion for Bhutan’s national sport. We have a small archery range where guests can try their hand at this cherished tradition.
